Wien 1010 Innere Stadt - Miscellaneous First District Photos
Here are a few pictures I took down in the first district back in April. I'm trying to catch up with my photo backlog, but it's a daunting task.

I think this dog was waiting on his owner, who was probably having lunch inside the sushi restaurant outside which he (the dog) was tied.

Zanoni and Zanoni is probably the most famous of the many Gelateria (Italian ice cream parlors) in Vienna. The ice cream is good and cheap - €2 for 3 big scoops on a cone.

This is a pretty common site on the sidewalks near Zanoni and Zanoni.

BAWAG = Bank für Arbeit und Wirtschaft, AG = Bank for work/employment and economy, Inc. Interesting architecture on Rotenturmstrasse.

Aida is a chain of Viennese cafes mostly frequented by little old ladies.

Nice building on the Lugeck fronted by a statue of Johannes Gutenberg.

This old blue Volkswagen van was in great shape.
More interesting architecture in the first district at the Neuer Markt.

I'm not sure what the purpose of this cylinder is. It doesn't appear to be an elevator shaft. The cylinder is attached to one of the modern buildings in the second district (Leopoldstadt), just across the Danube Canal from the first district.

Wien 1010 Innere Stadt - Neuer Markt / Donner Brunnen
I took these photos of the Donner Brunnen (Donner Fountain) back in April.

The Donner Brunnen is a popular place to relax in the first district. There are almost always people sitting on the edges.

The fountain is located on the Neuer Markt (Formerly Mehlmarkt), one block off of Kärnterstrasse.

Designed by Georg Raphael Donner, the fountain was constructed between 1737 and 1739.

Wien 1170 Hernals - Wienerwald Photos
I'm jumping around a little chronologically here. I have a pretty big backlog of pictures to post to the blog. The photos in this post were taken in April, at the same time as these Hernals photos. The Wienerwald (Vienna woods) is huge, bordering the western side of the city. It takes me about 10 minutes to reach the woods via public transport. I don't think I could hack living in Vienna if there wasn't some nice nature nearby.

This plaque is a memorial to Richard Bambula, a 17-year old ehrsame Jungling (honorable boy) who died in 1919 while driving timber in the woods.

Here's John, contemplating a walk through the forest.

I need to get out to the Wienerwald and take some pictures during the Summer. These are a little stark.

This lady was really friendly. She chatted with John and I for awhile about damals (back then), modern child-rearing practices and her regular walks through the woods, exercising other people's dogs.

Austrian forests remind me of Märchen (fairy tales). Somehow, they seem to be the perfect settings for stories like those from the brothers Grimm.

The city backs right up onto the forest, thankfully.

Styria / Salzkammergut / Grundlsee Photos
My mom visited me this Summer, and she and I spent an amazing week touring around the Salzkammergut. The Salzkammergut is a picturesque area in the Austrian Alps near Salzburg. Rich in history and beautiful scenery, the area is home to a multitude of pristine lakes, quaint villages and majestic mountains.
The pictures in this post were taken around the Grundlsee (Lake Grundl), where our hotel was located. The Grundlsee is located in the Austrian state of Steiermark (also known as Styria). I'll get some more pictures of this beautiful region online soon. I'll also try to spruce up the captions a little.

The only motorized boats on this lake were the tourist ferries and small boats with electric motors. No ski boats or jet skis.

Wow.

Our resort consisted of the brown buildings on the hill. We had a lakeview room in the front building.

Ferienwohnungen = Vacation apartments. There was an abundance of private guesthouses around the lake.

This is the view from our resort / hotel.

Swan and fishermen.

One of the small villages bordering the lake.

This house was right on the lake.

Austrians tend to pay a lot of attention to their houses and gardens.

Fly fishing would be nice.

I was intrigued by the white mansion on the other side of the lake. We tried to drive to it, but had no luck. My mom was pretty adventurous - she was doing the driving, and I was the copilot. We make a pretty good team.

Taxi boat. We wanted to take a boat trip around the lake, but ended up so busy exploring the area that we didn't have a chance to do it. Oh well, next time.

White mansion and fisherman.

This guy is the logo of the Salzkammergut cultural event that was going on all around the region this summer.

Or you could rent a pedal boat.

Told you I was intrigued by this house. My mom drove through some pretty hairy little trails to try to reach this place. We ignored all signs telling us that only local traffic was allowed.

Sailboats were also allowed on the lake.

Another view of our resort.

Just some signs in one of the villages on the lake.

Betreten der Krananlage verboten = Entering the crane installation is forbidden.

This is not a waterski.

Post office.

Church

Maibaum (Maypole)

Grias Enk = Grüß Euch = Gruess Euch = Howdy, Y'all

Maypole detail. Most of the maypoles in this area had dolls like this climbing up them. The girl doll was always just a little higher than the guy doll.

Our resort again.

As I mentioned, the lake was a little high.

A poem on a plaque in front of the yacht club.

Clubgelände - Benützung nor für Mitglieder = Club grounds - Only for members' use.

Parking sign.

These guys played some oompapa music on this pier for an our or so. You could hear the music from across the lake.

We saw this family of ducks several times, on several different parts of the lake.

Shoe = flower pot.

Again.

Nochmal.

I could handle a summer house out here.

This chapel was tiny. My mom and our rent car were hidden just behind it.

Grundlsee.

Chapel steeple.

Basketball goal.

70 kilometers per hour.

Another church.

Church again.

One last time. This church wasn't too old - 100 years or so, I believe.

Another, bigger maypole.
