Styria / Salzkammergut / Grundlsee Photos
My mom visited me this Summer, and she and I spent an amazing week touring around the Salzkammergut. The Salzkammergut is a picturesque area in the Austrian Alps near Salzburg. Rich in history and beautiful scenery, the area is home to a multitude of pristine lakes, quaint villages and majestic mountains.
The pictures in this post were taken around the Grundlsee (Lake Grundl), where our hotel was located. The Grundlsee is located in the Austrian state of Steiermark (also known as Styria). I'll get some more pictures of this beautiful region online soon. I'll also try to spruce up the captions a little.

The only motorized boats on this lake were the tourist ferries and small boats with electric motors. No ski boats or jet skis.

Wow.

Our resort consisted of the brown buildings on the hill. We had a lakeview room in the front building.

Ferienwohnungen = Vacation apartments. There was an abundance of private guesthouses around the lake.

This is the view from our resort / hotel.

Swan and fishermen.

One of the small villages bordering the lake.

This house was right on the lake.

Austrians tend to pay a lot of attention to their houses and gardens.

Fly fishing would be nice.

I was intrigued by the white mansion on the other side of the lake. We tried to drive to it, but had no luck. My mom was pretty adventurous - she was doing the driving, and I was the copilot. We make a pretty good team.

Taxi boat. We wanted to take a boat trip around the lake, but ended up so busy exploring the area that we didn't have a chance to do it. Oh well, next time.

White mansion and fisherman.

This guy is the logo of the Salzkammergut cultural event that was going on all around the region this summer.

Or you could rent a pedal boat.

Told you I was intrigued by this house. My mom drove through some pretty hairy little trails to try to reach this place. We ignored all signs telling us that only local traffic was allowed.

Sailboats were also allowed on the lake.

Another view of our resort.

Just some signs in one of the villages on the lake.

Betreten der Krananlage verboten = Entering the crane installation is forbidden.

This is not a waterski.

Post office.

Church

Maibaum (Maypole)

Grias Enk = Grüß Euch = Gruess Euch = Howdy, Y'all

Maypole detail. Most of the maypoles in this area had dolls like this climbing up them. The girl doll was always just a little higher than the guy doll.

Our resort again.

As I mentioned, the lake was a little high.

A poem on a plaque in front of the yacht club.

Clubgelände - Benützung nor für Mitglieder = Club grounds - Only for members' use.

Parking sign.

These guys played some oompapa music on this pier for an our or so. You could hear the music from across the lake.

We saw this family of ducks several times, on several different parts of the lake.

Shoe = flower pot.

Again.

Nochmal.

I could handle a summer house out here.

This chapel was tiny. My mom and our rent car were hidden just behind it.

Grundlsee.

Chapel steeple.

Basketball goal.

70 kilometers per hour.

Another church.

Church again.

One last time. This church wasn't too old - 100 years or so, I believe.

Another, bigger maypole.

Maypole detail.

Thanks man! I opened up an online store at cafepress.com to sell products
with my images on them - thanks for the idea... I only have one
product on there right now, but I'll add some more in the next few
days. The URL is http://www.cafepress.com/austrian_photos . Take a
look if you get a chance.

Well... maybe Austrian politics is pretty weird, but you should mention that HC Straches chances to become mayor of Vienna are only slightly bigger than his chances to become president of the US.

Gott sei dank es gibt a Häupl... By weird, I was referring to the FPÖ, BZÖ, Haider, Gudenus, Strache, etc. I guess it's probably safe to say that politics is weird in most countries, but politics in any country probably tends to appear weirder to nominal outsiders (like me).

WOW!!!! The pictures turned out great! Can't wait to see more--it's almost as nice as being there! We did make a good team, didn't we? I hope we can do it again.

Hey Mom,
I'm happy with a lot of the pictures. I still have a couple hundred from our trip to get online. We made an awesome team, and I really enjoyed our week together. I really hope we get a chance to do something like that again. I had a lot of fun!
