Wien 1060 (Mariahilf) Fillgraderstiege
I took around 250 pictures of the Fillgraderstiege (Fillgrader Stairs) on Wednesday. Later that day, I did some research on the stairs and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have been named the "4th most beautiful stairs in Europe."
These Jugenstil stairs were designed by Max Hegele, a student of Otto Wagner. Hegele also designed the Karl Borromäus Kirche (Karl Lüger Kirche), located in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetary).
The Secessionist / Jugendstil stairs were originally built between 1905 and 1907. I also have some pictures of Otto Wagner's Schemmerlbrücke, if you're interested in Jugenstil / Art Nouveau / Art Deco architecture.
The Stiege had to be closed in 1981, due to damage caused by nearby construction. They were restored between 1982 and 1984, then reopened.
The Fillgraderstiege are located just off of Mariahilferstrasse - turn off of Mariahilferstrasse at the Starbucks (blech) and walk a couple of blocks if you'd like to take a look, yourself.
Das Fillgrader is a wine bar and art gallery located under the Fillgraderstiege.
I got some strange looks from passers-by as I climbed all over the stairs, putting myself at considerable risk to get the best photos of the stairs :-)
Europe's 4th most beautiful bicycle stand.
That's Mariahilferstrasse, directly in front of this amorous pair.
