Salzburg Altstadt Photos

Salzburg (Salt Castle / Fortress)'s rich salt resources made it an important center of commercial and religious power.

Wealthy merchants built ornate buildings like this one, on the square in front of the University Church.

The clock tower at the end of this narrow alley in the Altstadt (Old City) is part of the Salzburgerger Rathaus (Council House / City Hall).

Salzburg is bursting with colorful, old architecture.

The merchants built their mansions, and the archbishops built their churches. The square tower belongs to the Franziskanerkirche (Franciscan Church), the dome behind it to the Salzburger Dom (Cathedral).

Oddly-shaped windows on the Franziskanerkirche.
One of many narrow alleys dotted with hotels, cafes and shops in Salzburg's Altstadt.
Take a look at my other Salzburg Photos.
