Walking Home from Work (Wien)
I walked home from work yesterday along the Danube. It took me 3 hours. The weather was perfect, and I had a blast. This is a sample of the 150 or so pictures I took along the way:
I looked for a better fishing picture, but this was the best I could find. People fish all along this leg of the Danube.

Schemmerlbrücke is a bridge and locks combination built to protect Vienna from floods.
The bridge has a statue of a lion at each end. The lions face upriver, away from Vienna.

Schemmerlbrücke was built after a Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) design created by Otto Wagner. I also have a few pictures of the Karl Borromäus-Kirche, a church designed by Max Hegele, one of Wagner's students.

Here you can see the lock mechanism (my ship lock vocabulary is lacking or I would be more descriptive).

An elevated highway runs along this side of the Danube for a while. The space underneath it is used to store all kinds of road construction materials, machines and trash. These tar buckets were piled in a dumpster, waiting to be carted off.

More of the road construction stuff.

Bau Profi = Construction Professional(s).

Vienna's Fernwärme waste incineration / distance-heating plant -- facade designed by Hunderwasser.

This picture was taken along the U4 (subway line 4). When I'm not hoofing it (or late and taking a taxi), I usually ride the U4 most of the way to and from work.

Taken at the Friedensbrücke U4 Station - Link goes to a recording of the announcement played on the U4 before it pulls into Friedensbrücke. It's a sound I hear it at least once every workday.

Taken at the Friedensbrücke U4 Station - The recording says: "Friedensbrücke - umsteigen zu den Linien G, D und fünf." Translation: "Peace Bridge - Transfer to lines G, D and five."

I didn't realize this vorlorn place was a Pension (cheap hotel) until I saw the picture on my computer screen. It looked pretty abandoned, though. I lived in various Pensions for the first 6 months after I arrived in Vienna.

The Votivkirche (Votive Church) is a ten minute walk from my house. This was taken without a tripod. That's one of my next investments.
