Q: What does "man on the ground" mean?
A: The "man on the ground" is the person who is there, on the scene, to witness and take part in life. Sometimes it is used to refer to a news reporter who is sent to some foreign land to report on breaking events occuring there. Other times it's used to describe a company representative who is sent to monitor a supplier's performance, or negotiate contracts in faraway places. Well, that's me. I'm "on the ground," all over the world, reporting here on what I see.

I'm a 32-year-old software guy from Texas whose passion is travel. After losing my dot com job in Austin a few years ago, I dropped everything, borrowed a backpack, and hit the road.
Since then I've travelled to Asia (twice), Africa, South America and Europe (where I am now living, in Vienna, Austria).
I created this site so I could share some of my experiences and photographs with friends, family and whoever else might be interested in them.
Feel free to ask me any questions you'd like about my photos, travel experiences, or other subjects covered on the site. I will be happy to give you hotel names / prices / recommendations, as well info on tour guides (I've done an 8-hour camel trip through the desert, an elephant ride in the jungle, camped in the Amazon rainforest, hang glided in Rio de Janeiro, canoed in Southern China, etc).
Also, if you would like information on or photos of a specific place or event in Vienna (or just about anywhere, for that matter), send me an email at kurt_milam@hotmail.com . I use a 6.3 megapixel Canon 300D (EOS Digital SLR). You can take a look at some of my pictures, if you'd like to see a "portfolio" of sorts.
Lastly, I work as a freelance tour guide. I will direct you to "real" restaurants and bars, inexpensive lodging, inexpensive tickets to non tourist events, museum passes, etc. I can tell you what to miss and what not to miss, based on your preferences, and I can lead custom tours to suit your interests (architectural, museum, cultural, art, historical, day in the life, nature, etc). If you're coming to central Europe and would like a guide who speaks native English and can give you some good cultural tips that will make your time on the Continent more enjoyable, drop me a line at kurt_milam@hotmail.com and I can give you more details.
